At Frilu, one question we hear again and again in our showrooms is: “What’s the difference between 16mm and 20mm porcelain tiles?” It’s an important question for anyone investing in a garden surface that needs to look stunning and stand the test of time.

Some customers assume there’s little difference between the two, but there are a few key factors to consider, such as durability, and long-term performance.

In this quick guide, we’ll break down the main differences between 16mm and 20mm porcelain paving and explain why 20mm tiles are often the smarter choice for many outdoor projects.

What’s the Difference Between 16mm and 20mm Tiles?

On the surface, they both look very similar. They’re stylish, contemporary, and extremely low maintenance. But structurally, the extra 4mm makes a significant difference, especially over time and under pressure.

16mm Porcelain Paving

  • Lightweight and easier to handle
  • Typically lower in cost making it the budget friendly option
  • Suitable for use with solid bedding or pedestal systems

However, 16mm tiles can be more prone to chipping or cracking under heavy loads or extreme weather. The install is also a lot more complicated and expensive, you should be laying on a concrete pad of no less than 100mm thick with an anti-crack mat system and expansion joints at the recommended positions on top of a membrane and type1 subbase and bonding with an outdoor tile adhesive. This process then creates more cost in labour, materials and removal of all the extra dig out.

20mm Porcelain Paving

  • Extra strength and load-bearing capacity
  • Better resistance to impact, movement, and extreme weather

The additional thickness provides peace of mind for homeowners wanting a long-lasting, future-proof surface. It’s also often more forgiving during installation, reducing the risk of breakage.

The install is a lot more cost effective as you only need to lay on a minimum of 100mm type1 subbase with a ground stabilising membrane underneath. The paving should be bedded on a full mortar bed using the correct ratio of grit sand (Patio grit) and cement with a primer on the back of the tile to give full adhesion.

Why 20mm Might Be the Better Long-Term Investment

So what’s the answer? If you’re weighing up the long-term benefits, 20mm tiles have the edge in a few important areas:

Installation

It’s more cost-effective for your overall project.

More Durable Under Pressure

Heavy outdoor furniture, planters, BBQs, (even consistent foot traffic) can take a toll on thinner paving. The 20mm option is engineered to handle it all without compromising performance or appearance.

Less Risk of Damage Over Time

Weather, shifting ground, or minor installation imperfections can stress paving over the years. Thicker porcelain tiles are more resilient to these issues, reducing the risk of costly replacements.

Better Suited to UK Conditions

With freeze-thaw cycles and regular rainfall, outdoor surfaces in the UK need to be tough. 20mm tiles offer greater stability in fluctuating conditions.

Think About Usage and Location

If you’re paving a quiet courtyard or decorative path, 16mm may be suitable. But for patios, outdoor kitchens, or family gardens with lots of activity, we recommend you go with 20mm for added strength and peace of mind.

When in doubt, ask: “Will this surface need to handle weight, movement, or heavy use over time?”

If the answer is yes: 20mm is usually worth the slightly higher investment.
